The Swiss bid to host the 2029 Special Olympics World Winter Games has cleared another hurdle with the virtual site visit. Unfortunately, the evaluation commission of Special Olympics International (SOI) was unable to examine the bid on site due to the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, the initiators led by Special Olympics CEO Bruno Barth submitted extensive video, plan and photo material and presented the bid in online meetings. The feedback from the commission was very positive and motivating.
Next steps – talks with Sports Minister Viola Amherd
The next item on the agenda is an online meeting between Federal Councillor Viola Amherd and the SOI Chairman, Timothy Shriver, at the beginning of May.
In addition to fundamental persuasion, the meeting will also help to ensure that the 2025 and 2029 World Games are awarded twice on June 18, 2021.
This would give new impetus to the inclusive developments in Swiss sport and disability policy that the hosting of the World Winter Games calls for in the coming years.
If the contract is awarded to Switzerland, an online information event on the major project will take place on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at 4.30 pm.
